KPIs without strategy are statistics without a story
A KPI (Key Performance Indicator) is only useful if it is linked to a goal. "More reach" is not a KPI. "10% growth in monthly reach over Q2 2025 on Instagram" is a KPI. The difference is measurability, time-boundedness, and context.
Most agencies set too many KPIs, or set them too vaguely. The result: reports that are overwhelming and help no one make decisions.
The SMART KPI method for social media
Use the SMART criteria for each KPI:
- Specific: Which platform, which format, which metric?
- Measurable: How and where do we measure this?
- Achievable: Is it realistic given the current baseline?
- Relevant: Does this contribute to the client's business goal?
- Time-bound: When do we evaluate this?
KPIs per objective
Objective: Increase brand awareness
- Monthly reach (unique accounts reached)
- Total impressions
- Follower growth (net, not gross)
- Share of voice vs. competitors (if measurable)
Objective: Build community and engagement
- Engagement rate (likes + comments + saves + shares / reach × 100)
- Average number of comments per post
- DM volume (inbound messages)
- Story interactions (replies, poll participation)
Objective: Generate website traffic
- Link clicks per post
- Sessions via social media (Google Analytics)
- Bounce rate of social media visitors
- Pages per session from social traffic
Objective: Leads and conversions
- Form submissions via social media (tracked)
- Cost per lead via paid social (if applicable)
- Conversion rate from social traffic
- Direct purchases via social (e-commerce)
How many KPIs per client?
The rule of thumb: a maximum of five primary KPIs per client, supplemented with a maximum of ten supporting metrics. Anything above that is noise. Choose the five that most directly link to what the client wants to achieve.
Communicating KPIs to clients
Not every client understands "engagement rate" or "impressions". Translate KPIs into meaning: "Your posts were seen by 15,000 unique people this month — that's a stadium full of potential clients." That resonates differently than a number.
